Cleaning staff demonstrated at Sadar Hospital on Monday after a female employee accused a supervisor of mistreating her. The supervisor claimed that the woman was late for duty and when he reprimanded her, she hit him.
After that, other hospital employees started protesting. Work was suspended for several hours. Civil Surgeon AB Prasad said he was investigating the matter. “Employees are asked to be punctual. The controversy seems likely to be a reaction to that," he said.
Ruby Devi, a sweeper, alleged that her supervisor repeatedly threatened to remove her from work for several days. He has been working at the hospital for seven years and is always on time. "I was a little late today. Regular offenders are never reprimanded. Today the supervisor raised his hand," she said.
Supervisor Ram Sharma denied the allegations.
